Here are some pictures of my disassembled Nokia 6111. I was waiting for this phone since the
day Nokia announced it, so I bought
it right away when Plemix added it to their store. I paid $450 for the phone. They shipped
the phone from Hong Kong and I got it within two days on 11/11/05. It was a sweet phone, but...
Two weeks later (26/11/05) when I was using the phone, I noticed that there was some friction when
I slid it. That went away the next day. Soon after, the screen got very flaky. It turned
white when I opened the phone. I closed it, and then the display came on. But after
opening and closing it again, the display stayed at white. I was hopeful that the display
connection was just loose. So I bought a torx
screwdriver and patiently figured out how to open the phone. I had no choice,
since Plemix doesn't give a warranty on the phone. I didn't think it would
matter, since I've never had a Nokia die on me.
As you can see, the ribbon cable which connects the LCD on the sliding module to the phone
has cracked. Most likely this is caused by one of the two springs that help make the sliding smooth.
I contacted Nokia USA. But they said they won't repair the phone since it's not yet
sold in the US. They suggested I contact Nokia Europe. I phoned them, but they said that
they only support phones purchased in Europe. They suggested I phone Nokia HK, since the
website where I bought it from got it there. I phoned Nokia HK but they said I need to
bring the phone to the local store where I bought it from. Nokia's online support has
not been helpful as well.
I have put up this page because I have received many emails from people who have had this same problem.
Nokia has not helped any of these people. Those lucky enough to have bought it directly from a carrier
have got replacements. But those who paid a lot of money to get an unlocked one are basically screwed.
On the GSM Arena forums, someone who
claims they're from Nokia UK has admitted to this defect, and said that they're redesiging the ribbon
cable to make it stronger.
Update (3/1/06): I have been told by someone who knows a distributor that Nokia issued a recall on all
Nokia 6111s on December 11. Plemix is still not willing to take it back though.
